| | Bridgend Allotments Community Health Project One of the things that makes this new organic allotment site so vibrant is the presence of the NHS Health Project. Four of the plots are being developed with the help of two gardeners, employed with Big Lottery money, to create a dynamic growing area. The project welcomes everyone, whatever their age, background, knowledge or ability. Our youngest participant was two and our oldest – at a guess, is in his 70s! This first year has seen a great mix of people discovering or rekindling the delights of growing fruit and veg, working together and harvesting the food. Cooking sessions have become a regular event, and the atmosphere is happy and relaxed. The project is seeking to promote an holistic approach to health – encouraging people into physical activity, healthy eating, being outdoors and mixing with others through the practical and companiable work involved in creating a garden. Older people escape the loneliness of social isolation and young people and children find role models and surrogate grandparents, whilst those lacking confidence through illness perhaps regain their esteem and a sense of well-being.
